Thriving Wetlands

A day to get inspired, meet and discuss Skogaryd hosts extensive facilities and activities connected to the Swedish national research infrastructures SITES, ICOS and this year also ACTRIS. The site already supports research on ecosystem processes, environmental change and environmental monitoring. With this event, we want to broaden the community around Skogaryd and create space for more biodiversity-focused research.
The day is designed to bring together researchers and students interested in biodiversity, wetlands, restoration and ecosystem research. You may already have a research idea, be looking for a field site, or simply be curious about what Skogaryd could offer.

Thriving Wetlands - visit to Skogaryd Research Catchment

As part of the program, we are pleased to welcome Matti Ermold from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket).
Matti works with wetlands at Naturvårdsverket and will give us a national perspective on wetland protection, restoration and the role of wetlands in achieving environmental objectives. His presentation will also set the scene for an important question for the rest of the day:
How do we know whether a wetland is thriving—and what role research and long-term monitoring can play in answering that question?
Explore Skogaryd
After the presentations, we will head outdoors to explore the research environments and infrastructure at Skogaryd. Researchers will introduce several key sites, explain ongoing research and highlight opportunities for future research, monitoring and education.
We will visit four stations:
•    Rewetting site — research and monitoring in a rewetted environment
•    Go:EPIC the new ACTRIS explorative platform— atmospheric measurements and the visiting ACTRIS installations
•    Wet forest & Malaise trap — flux measurements and biodiversity monitoring 
•    Följesjön — the lake and its surrounding research environment
At each stop, we will also encourage a relaxed mini-bioblitz (species survey). We will look for and identify species along the way— as a way of exploring Skogaryd together and seeing the environment from different perspectives.
Note: No previous species-identification experience is required!

What could thrive at Skogaryd?
We will finish the day with an open discussion about the research at Skogaryd with emphasis on biodiversity.
What biodiversity questions could be addressed here? What infrastructure and long-term observations would biodiversity researchers need? And could Skogaryd become a platform for new collaborations, experiments and monitoring?
Come with an idea, a research question, or simply curiosity.
