ICOS Carbon Portal
The ICOS Carbon Portal is the central data portal for ICOS, a European research infrastructure that monitors greenhouse gases. The portal provides open and quality-assured data from more than 180 measurement stations across Europe, recording concentrations and fluxes of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, ecosystems, and the marine environment.
The data are used to understand how greenhouse gases move through the environment and serve as an important basis for climate research and international climate models.
ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) coordinates standardised measurements and data services and offers a common framework for data collection, quality assurance, and accessibility within the research infrastructure. The ICOS Carbon Portal provides a single entry point to ICOS data services, including tools for visualisation, modelling, and data download.
Collaboration with other research infrastructures
In addition to serving as a data repository, the portal develops advanced scientific data products together with users and research projects, provides Virtual Research Environments (VREs) and computational resources, and brings together complementary data sources such as emissions data and model results. The portal also collaborates with other European and global research infrastructures to harmonise metadata and strengthen data compatibility.
The ICOS Carbon Portal follows the FAIR principles and ensures long-term data storage, data security, open access, and high reusability. The portal is hosted at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Lund University and is operated in close collaboration with Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
