Doctoral studies in Geographical Information Science

The doctoral programme in Geographical Information Science addresses advanced methods for collecting, storing, analysing, visualising, and making geographic data accessible. The field integrates technical and theoretical perspectives and plays a central role in research related to the environment, society, climate, and sustainable development.

The programme leads to a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy or a Degree of Licentiate of Philosophy in Geobiosphere Science with a specialization in Geographical Information Science. A doctoral degree comprises four years of full‑time study, of which approximately one year is devoted to courses and seminars and the remaining time to independent research and thesis work.

Subject Area: Geographical Information Science

Geographical Information Science is an interdisciplinary research field that develops and applies methods for understanding and analyzing spatial patterns and processes. The subject encompasses the entire chain of geographic data, from collection and integration to analysis, modelling, storage, distribution, and visualization.

Research in Geographical Information Science includes both discipline‑oriented studies of methods and techniques and applied research in which geographic data are used to analyze complex problems in other fields. Key areas include:

  • collection of primary field data and interpretation of remote‑sensing data
  • integration of geographic data over time, often linked to models of processes such as ecosystem dynamics
  • development of web‑based distribution systems and digital geographic infrastructures
  • quality assessment, data modelling, and spatial analysis

The field has strong interdisciplinary connections to environmental science, climate research, hydrology, demography, public health, and spatial planning.
