The research area MERGE

MERGE stands for ModElling the Regional and Global Earth system and is a strategic research area involving around 250 researchers from Lund University, the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and SMHI (Rossby Centre). The research focuses on climate modelling at both regional and global scales.

MERGE encompasses advanced research, disciplinary and interdisciplinary doctoral education, and dialogue with stakeholders and society at large.

The focus is on understanding the interactions between the atmosphere and the land surface, with particular emphasis on land use, vegetation, and terrestrial ecosystems. Climate is influenced by these interactions, but a changing climate in turn also affects vegetation and ecosystems. Climate models have only recently begun to include these linkages, and results show that they need to be considered when developing climate scenarios and studying climate impacts.

MERGE is organisationally based at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
